Scaling and Polishing

What is the difference between scaling and polishing?

Short answer

Scaling removes hardened plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and along the gumline using fine instruments, while polishing smooths the enamel afterward to remove surface stains and make it harder for new plaque to stick. They're done together as one combined cleaning procedure, not as separate treatments.
